You think it’s time to fulfill that dream of owning a Pitbull?
But somewhere deep down, you adore the Huskies. You can’t seem to pick one without feeling you’re missing out on something else.
Well, you can decide to have both.
But there’s really no need. You just need to get yourself a Pitbull husky mix. With this crossbreed you virtually own both a Pitbull and a husky all in one dog.
The Pitbull Husky Mix
This dog is a cross between the American Pitbull Terrier and the Siberian or Alaskan husky. He is usually called a pitsky. Kinda catchy.
The length of existence of the Pitbull Husky mix is not known as they may have occurred naturally before breeders got into it. But deliberate breeding of the pitsky started in the late 90s.
Although the husky mix with Pitbull has been around for a while, this dog isn’t recognized by organizations such as the American Kennel Club or Dog registry of America. This is due to its hybrid nature.
Do not be quick to say how a pitsky would behave based on the not-so-good reputation of his parent breeds. His parentage might give you clues, but it’s not set in stones. Any dog can be trained to be loveable and well-behaved.
To get a glimpse of what to expect with the pitsky, let’s look at his parent breed.
Initially bred by the chuchki people of Siberia, this dog was used for sledding. Hence he is very energetic and requires more exercise than many other breeds.
One of its unique features is his eyes, colorful and captivating. Huskies are friendly, adorable, and playful.
Being a very active dog, loneliness is not their forte. So when left alone, they might try to escape by digging or jumping over the fence.
American Pitbull terrier
Due to their past as a bull and bear baiter, the Pitbull is perceived as aggressive, ferocious, and courageous. But in reality, pitties feel everyone loves them and are friendly.
They do have a strong personality though; confident and courageous. It suffers separation anxiety when left alone and can resort to destroying things.
Pitbulls are intelligent, loyal and affectionate.
The American Pitbull Terrier isn’t recognized by the American Kennel Club due to its bad reputation.
When it comes to looks, the Pitbull and husky mix is unable to be predicted. Would it look more like the husky or the pittie?
The interesting part still remains that you’ll be the owner of a unique, one-of-a-kind dog.
Although you should be prepared for an unforeseen outcome, this doesn’t stop them from being beautiful and adorable. The pitsky might inherit the Pitbull’s smile or the piercing blue eye from his husky parent.
Both parent breeds have different body builds, so your Pitbull husky mix puppy would look more like one than the other. The Pitbull is muscular and robust while the husky is slim and slender.
The size of a Pitbull husky mix can hardly be guaranteed. This is because they can grow to be the size of a husky, a Pitbull, or anywhere in between.
Even the growth of Pitbull is unpredictable. But on average, an adult male Pitbull weighs around 30 – 85 pounds and grows to be 18 – 19 inches tall.
As for the husky, an adult male usually weighs 40 – 60 pounds and is 21 – 24 inches tall.
From these, we can project that the pitsky can weigh anywhere from 30 – 80 pounds and grow up to be 18 – 24 inches tall.
This hybrid is a medium to large-sized dog. As usual, females tend to be smaller.
Between the Pitbull and husky, there’s a wide variation of coat colour pitsky puppies can inherit. The husky coat colour includes; pure white, Gray and White or black and white. Whereas the common colours of Pitbull are blue, white black, red, grey and brown.
Depending on which they inherit, your Pitbull husky mix can have a short and coarse coat like the Pitbull or long, thick double coat like the husky. Pitsky puppies with similar coats to Pitbulls tend to shed less than those who inherited the husky genes.
The Pitbull and husky mix has a long muzzle, broad head, almond-shaped eyes, and erect ears.
It may be tricky trying to determine the behavior of a crossbreed, so it’s usually better to do some research and not just rush into getting one.
The Pitbull husky mix will show traits inherited from both parent breeds whether balanced or unbalanced. But it doesn’t just end with nature, nurture also goes a long want into shaping your dog.
Though generally, the pitsky has a uniform temperament, very friendly and affectionate. They can be that companion you’ve been searching for.
You might have to deal with excessive barking as this Pitbull and husky mix is very protective of his family especially when strangers are around.
The pitsky dog is prone to separation anxiety, so never leave your dog alone for too long. If you do, he might get destructive and start digging, chewing, or barking excessively.
He is a very good guard dog and family pet as he gets along well with your children. But that doesn’t mean you should leave your kids with your dog unsupervised. Not that your pitsky would harm your child, but he might not his strength while playing.
This should be a bit easy as both parent breeds are very intelligent hence the Pitbull husky mix isn’t any different.
Training should commence once you bring your Pitbull husky mix puppy home. As your pup grows, his brain undergoes a lot of development therefore commands/ training tend to stick better if started at an early age.
It’s best to use positive reinforcement as an incentive for training. It increases the success rate by much. This would make them know what to do just to get that treat from you.
Not every behavior is acceptable, so it’s better to start socialization training very early. Let them meet more people, children, and other animals. This prevents them from being agitated around new people.
Thanks to their husky blood, the husky mixed with Pitbull loves to keep busy. He always loves doing something. It is important to always engage them mentally as it keeps them from getting bored.
You’d have to fashion games to play with them.
Crate training is also relevant. It helps your pitsky know that he has a safe place whenever you’re not around. Make sure to associate the crate with comfort and luxury, not punishment.
That’s just how the Pitbull husky mix is. His ancestry bestowed upon him these gifts therefore they will require at least 90 minutes of exercise daily.
Taking walks is a good start. But you can take your pitsky dog on jogs, hikes, or any activity that they can join you in doing.
Just make sure they’re are active and we’ll exercised.
Just like us humans, your pup has to get a nutritionally balanced meal to thrive. And the amount he eats will depend on his weight, age, and activity level.
Each Pitbull husky mix is probably different and likes different things. But generally, they’d require about 3 cups of dried dog food daily divided into 2 meals.
Do not try to make your pitsky into a glutton, just be sure to give him enough to keep up with his energetic lifestyle.
As I said earlier, your dog requires a balanced meal, therefore, I’m talking about proteins, vitamins, fats, carbohydrates, etc.
If you don’t know in what proportion these should be, kindly consult your vet or a pet nutritionist to help you out.
Weight gain is something you should prevent as a result of overfeeding. Just give your dog adequate food and not too much.
Asides good looks, one of the reasons for crossbreeds is their likelihood to be more healthy than parent breeds. This is probably due to genetic variation.
A pitsky living healthily can live up to 12 – 15 years.
But still, it doesn’t take away the fact that your Pitbull and husky mix can still get sick. The health issues related to him are inherited from his purebred parents. They include;
Hypothyroidism: Both parent breeds are prone to this condition. It affects your dog’s metabolism and deals blow to his appetite and weight.
Hip dysplasia: Common in the husky parent, it is the abnormal development of the hip. Your dog will experience pain on walking, limping, and even lameness.
Eyes diseases: Your Pitbull husky mix is predisposed to some eye issues such as cataract and retinal dysplasia.
It’s best to be on the lookout for any abnormal behavior or symptom from your dog and report to the vet immediately. Even if he’s healthy, make it a norm to go for regular checkups.
As for the coat, your pitsky would have either of two coats. The Pitbull’s short and coarse coat or husky’s long coat.
If you end up with a pup who has a short and coarse coat, then grooming would be easier as they shed less. So you just need to brush them once or twice a week.
On the other hand, if your pitsky comes in the long husky coat, you will have to brush him more frequently. At some point in the year, they shed more so you’d brush them every day, maybe even twice daily. This is to prevent fur from colonizing your home.
Bathing them is also ideal. Make sure you dry them out completely to prevent mold or mildew.
It’s important to clean your dog’s ears at least twice a week and check for any abnormalities while doing it.
Brush his teeth two times a week to prevent bad odour and tartar buildup.
Cut his nails before they get too long. Be careful while doing it.
